Lao Tzu is a legendary character who is thought to have written the Tao Té Ching, a taoist classic, which is a sort of handbook for leaders as well as ordinary citizens. It is a beautiful, poetic, wise and paradoxical meditation about the Tao, the true path in life, and how to find it.

The exercises he does here are related to the Tai Chi,  whose origins are lost in time, but whose practice is based on taoist ideas of balance (yin and yang), of softness combined with power, of closeness to nature, and ultimately, good health.

The legend says that Lao Tzu, the emperor's librarian, became disillusioned with humanity and wished to cross the frontier to go and find his death peacefully in the great Himalayan mountains up in what is now Tibet. Crossing the frontier was illegal and he needed the help of the Gatekeeper, Yin Hsi, in exchange for his precious teachings.
